Electrician Estimate Template

Some electrical work cannot be priced precisely until you open it up. A rewire priced from a doorstep description can hide rubber-insulated cabling, no earth on the lighting circuits, or a consumer unit that turns out to be in worse condition than described. In those situations an estimate, clearly labelled as approximate, is the honest document to send, with a fixed quote to follow once you have surveyed the property or completed the first fix.

This template is worded for exactly that situation. It states that the figure is based on the information available, that it is subject to a site survey, and that it can change if hidden problems appear once work is opened up. Itemise the expected work in the same way you would a quote, with per-point lines for sockets and lights, the consumer unit, cable, containment and accessories, plus testing and certification, so the customer can see the shape of the price even though the final figure may move. An EICR carried out first is often the cleanest way to turn an estimate into a firm quote, because the test results tell you exactly what the existing installation needs.

What to include in an electrician estimate

  • Your business details, NICEIC or equivalent scheme registration number and insurance note
  • Customer name, address and the site address if different
  • Estimate number, date and the word estimate shown clearly in the title
  • A statement that the figure is approximate and subject to a site survey
  • Itemised best assessment of labour and materials, including per-point lines
  • Known unknowns: condition and age of the existing wiring, access, and making good
  • What could change the price once floors are lifted or walls are opened up
  • The next step: survey, EICR or inspection, then a fixed written quote

Electrician estimate FAQs

What is the difference between an estimate and a quote?

A quote is a fixed price for defined work: once the customer accepts it, that is what they pay unless the scope changes. An estimate is your best assessment from the information available and can move up or down as the real condition of the job becomes clear. For electrical work, estimates suit rewires and fault finding where hidden problems are likely, while quotes suit defined jobs like a consumer unit upgrade or an EV charger install.

When should an electrician send an estimate instead of a quote?

When you have not seen the property, or when the description suggests problems you cannot confirm, such as old rubber-insulated cabling, DIY alterations or an unknown number of circuits. Survey first where you can, but where a customer needs a ballpark figure quickly, an estimate sets expectations without committing you to a price that could leave you out of pocket.

Can the price change after the customer accepts an estimate?

Yes, that is the point of an estimate, but handle it openly. Tell the customer as soon as the extra work is found, explain what you have uncovered, and issue a revised estimate or a fixed quote for the remainder before carrying on. Surprises confirmed in writing rarely turn into disputes.

Can I make an estimate with the online generator?

Yes. Open the free quote generator, enter your itemised lines as normal and change the document title to Estimate. Add a note stating that the figure is approximate and subject to a site survey, then save it as a PDF.
